Travis Tygart, Director General of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of the RUSADA disciplinary committee to acquit Kamila Valieva.
Earlier, the disciplinary committee of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) annulled the result of figure skater Kamila Valieva at the 2022 Russian championship that she won. Valieva on December 25, 2021 won a gold medal at the Russian Championship in St. Petersburg with results above the world record. Later it became known that the figure skater’s doping test, taken on the day of her victory in the tournament, gave a positive result. On Friday, RUSADA informed the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) that Valieva was not at fault for the anti-doping rule violation, but canceled the result.
Tygart urged WADA and the International Skating Union to appeal the decision “for the credibility of the anti-doping system and for the rights of all athletes.”
“There is no way the world can accept this self-serving decision by RUSADA, which in the recent past was a key tool in Russia’s state-sponsored doping fraud and is inconsistent. Justice requires a full, fair, public hearing outside of Russia,” CNN quoted Tygart as saying.
The RUSADA Disciplinary Committee previously sent a relevant notice to the World Anti-Doping Agency. It is reported that WADA intends to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
