Poisoning with poison to control rodents was named the cause of the death of about 800 individuals of rare common cranes in November this year in the Stavropol Territory. A criminal case has been opened on the fact of the incident, the Investigative Committee of the ICR for the region reported.
According to the investigation, the dead cranes were found last month on the agricultural lands of the Petrovsky urban district. The dead birds are listed in the Red Book of the region.
In addition to cranes, 4 hares and a partridge died.
When conducting a chemical-toxicological study of carcasses of animals and birds, experts discovered a poison containing organophosphorus compounds.
It turned out that it contains a preparation for the fight against rodents, which, in violation of the instructions, was scattered on the surface of the soil.
A criminal case has been initiated under the article “Violation of the rules established for the fight against diseases and pests of plants, which, through negligence, entailed grave consequences.”
The population of the Common Crane is declining mainly due to the decrease in the area of territories suitable for its nesting. The problem is especially acute in Europe, the European part of Russia and Central Asia, where swamps dry up and drain.
