The Ministry of Health of Thailand made a statement about the extreme rarity of human infection with an amoeba that “devours” the brain. They also gave advice on how to protect yourself from this dangerous protozoan.
The announcement comes after a South Korean citizen died a few days ago from a disease caused by the amoeba Negleria Fowler. The man had just returned from a holiday in Thailand. The Ministry of Health of the Kingdom confirmed this fact and expressed condolences to the relatives of the deceased, but emphasized that infections with amoebic meningoencephalitis occur extremely rarely in the world. And the geography of the disease is limited not only to Thailand, but also to the Asian continent as a whole.
Amoeba Negleria Fowler is found in all countries of the world where natural reservoirs warm up to 32 degrees Celsius. In total, several hundred people have died from the “brain-eating amoeba” in the world in the entire history of observations.
The Ministry of Health of Thailand recalled the measures to prevent amoebic meningoencephalitis. Swimming and diving in fresh polluted waters should be avoided. Avoid getting water from such reservoirs into the nose. If this happens, you need to immediately blow your nose with force. Then you need to rinse your nose with salted boiled water.
If you nevertheless ventured to swim in such a reservoir, and then felt unwell (headache, nausea, loss of smell), you should immediately consult a doctor. The disease detected at the earliest stages is treated.
