2024 will be rich in important political events. Presidents will be determined in Russia and the United States, and elections will also be held in the European Parliament, the British House of Commons and the legislative bodies of several European countries. In addition, key conflicts and confrontations on the planet will develop or, conversely, end. In this regard, Kommersant FM columnist Mikhail Gurevich suggests not summing up the results of 2023.

Frankly speaking, analyzing the results of the next 365 days has been a very thankless task lately. It was so-so, it got no better, the prognosis is negative, options are possible. However, the reporting year 2023 is still more interesting; we will only know its real results next year. Therefore, I propose to deal with the summing up as with the birthday in the famous song of Shnur.

At the same time, in terms of world events, the year turned out to be amazing. Everything that seemed important at the beginning was almost forgotten by the end. Wars, crises, new bans, the rise and fall of idols, you name it. But it’s too early to talk about results on a global scale. After all, the main assessment must be made by the voter, and it just so happens that in 2024, electoral campaigns will take place in the most important regions of the world for us.

In March we will vote for a president, in June Europeans will elect a new European Parliament, in November there will be presidential elections in the United States, and before the end of 2024 there will be a parliamentary campaign in the UK. People will come to the ballot box and say how much they liked everything, and how they want to see the future of their country, the continent, and why bother, the world as a whole. Then the results of this and a couple of previous years will be made public.

It will become clear what Americans and Europeans think about the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, how they feel about the problem of immigration, the war in the Middle East, the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent wave of inflation. Separately, in the UK, it will finally become clear whether citizens are happy with the endless string of Conservatives as British Prime Minister.

By the way, I wouldn’t be surprised if there will also be electoral races in Israel and, perhaps, even in the Palestinian Authority. After a war, society often demands that the authorities renew the mandate of trust. The indefinite postponement of the Ukrainian presidential elections originally planned for the end of March is also symptomatic in this sense.

As Winston Churchill said: “Democracy is a bad form of government, but mankind has not come up with anything better.” Actually, it’s the same with elections – no one has come up with a better idea. And the fact that elections, like democracy, can be different – free, popular, sovereign – there is nothing to argue about.

By the way, for fans of especially sovereign voting: a separate show called parliamentary elections in Belarus is planned at the end of February 2024, and a year later, in 2025, Alexander Lukashenko himself will run for another term. It would seem that protests in the union republic took place only yesterday, but 3.5 years have already passed. Time flies unnoticed, just have time to record the results.

Therefore, perhaps it is good that we are spending this year without letting them down, at least in a geopolitical sense. The last week of 2023 begins, good results for you personally, and then we’ll talk about global ones. With coming!
