Over the year, the number of resources stealing Telegram user accounts has grown 67 times, follows from the statistics provided at the request of Vedomosti by specialists from RTK-Solar, a developer of cybersecurity solutions. If in May 2022, specialists recorded only 7 phishing sites, then in May 2023 – more than 470, said Alexander Vurasko, an expert at the company. It takes from 4 to 24 hours to block such a resource after discovery, he added. According to BI.ZONE estimates, almost 4,000 phishing domains were detected from January to May 2023.
A powerful wave of attacks on Telegram users has not stopped since the fall of 2022, Vurasko claims. Phishing schemes have several scenarios, Anton Yakimov, Deputy General Director of T1 Holding for Technological Development, explains. The first scenario provides that a group member receives a message from another community member on a similar topic with an advertisement or a request to register somewhere and send a code that will come from Telegram, the expert says. The second scenario is characterized by luring a person to a phishing site, which is similar to the Telegram web client, where he enters his phone number and confirmation code.
