New Year’s Eve 2023 brought St. Petersburg the warmest weather in the history of meteorological observations on this date, Mikhail Leus, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, said on his telegram channel.
According to him, at 07:00 on January 1, at the city weather station, the air temperature reached +4.8 degrees, which is 3 degrees higher than it was on that day in 2017.
The exact value of the new achievement will be known after 21:00, when readings are taken from the maximum thermometers, said Leus.
Earlier, the head of the Hydrometeorological Center of the northern capital, Alexander Kolesov, said that the temperature in the city on the night of December 31 to January 1 rose to +3.4 degrees, which has never happened in the history of meteorological observations on New Year’s Eve in St. Petersburg. In 1937, it was also extremely warm, but the temperature on the night of January 1 then rose to + 2.9 degrees.
In Moscow, on the first day of the new year, the air warmed up to +4.3 degrees, so the capital, 50 years later, set a new heat record for January 1. This was reported by the scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia Roman Vilfand.
However, unusually warm weather will soon be replaced by severe frosts. As previously reported, in St. Petersburg by Christmas it can get colder to minus 20, and in Moscow to minus 22 degrees.
In St. Petersburg, meanwhile, the wind will intensify, its gusts will reach 17 m/s. There, in this regard, a yellow level of weather danger was declared from 13:00 on January 1 to 07:00 on January 2.
