Vandals in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, damaged a monument to the Soviet army, according to the Russian embassy in Bulgaria.
The incident took place on the night of February 23rd. Unknown people broke the slab of the monument, which states that it was erected by the “grateful Bulgarian people” in honor of Soviet soldiers.
Russian Ambassador to Bulgaria Eleonora Mitrofanova said the incident was “an outrageous act of vandalism.”
Russian diplomats sent a note to the Bulgarian authorities demanding that the commemorative plate be destroyed and that the culprits be found.
Meanwhile, the Estonian Defense Ministry requested about 1.5 million euros from the government budget for the elimination of Soviet monuments. In Estonia, 64 Soviet-era monuments have been demolished, and another 150 memorials are planned to be demolished.
