In Siberia, scientists have proposed a new type of treatment for the cornea of the eye

Scientists from Novosibirsk are developing a new method for treating the cornea of the eye, which can help patients with severe diseases leading to blindness. The research is carried out using cellular technologies and is carried out jointly with the Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Lymphology, a branch of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the SB RAS.
Current corneal treatment methods, including transplantation of donor material, face certain difficulties and limitations due to the limited amount of material available. Therefore, scientists decided to investigate the possibility of using cells isolated from a healthy cornea during laser vision correction operations using the ReLEx SMILE method. Fibroblasts and keratocytes were grown in the laboratory and assessed for their potential for therapeutic use.
Further experiments are carried out on animals, where the introduction of a cell suspension has shown positive results in restoring the transparency and thickness of the cornea. Scientists are awaiting the results of a histological study to better understand the mechanisms of interaction between cells and intercellular substance.
This scientific project is supported by the Russian Science Foundation (RSF) and is at the final stage of experiments. If the results are successful, a new method of treating corneas could hold promise for patients suffering from this disease.
