Retailers may be required to install Russian operating systems on imported computers
The Ministry of Digital Development wants to oblige sellers of equipment to pre-install Russian operating systems on laptops and personal computers.
About it on Tuesday informed Kommersant, citing a source in the Russian government.
According to the publication, this will help avoid security issues with Windows devices that are shipped via parallel import and do not receive updates.
The Cabinet of Ministers wants to transfer responsibility for installing Russian software to retailers.
“The Russian operating system should become additional,” the interlocutor of the publication explained.
According to him, the relevant document may be submitted to the government this quarter.
The retail chains said that the pre-installation of the Russian OS instead of the one already installed by the manufacturer would lead to an increase in the cost of computers and laptops. And installing two operating systems at the same time is “not feasible on all devices.”
