In Russia, the incidence of whooping cough has increased almost ninefold
The incidence of whooping cough has increased significantly in Russia. According to Rosstat, in 2022, 3.1 thousand cases were registered, then in 2023 (from January to October) the number of infected people reached 27.8 thousand people. This figure is a record for the last few years.
Edition “Kommersant” with reference to doctors, reports that the increase in the incidence of this infection in Russia is due to the uncontrolled migration flow and powerful propaganda from anti-vaxxers.
Experts conducted a survey among doctors and found that almost a quarter of doctors – 24.5% – rated the whooping cough situation in their region as tense. 29.9% of respondents – as moderate. 2.3% of medical workers consider the situation critical.
Whooping cough is an acute infectious disease characterized by a prolonged paroxysmal spasmodic cough. The infection affects not only the respiratory, but also the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
Earlier, Rospotrebnadzor and the Sorodintsev Influenza Research Institute warned about the increase in the incidence of influenza, ARVI and coronavirus infection. Experts call the simultaneous spread of three types of infections a tridemic. The decline in incidence, according to them, will occur in February-March.
