In the first three quarters of 2023, the migration growth of the Russian population in long-term international migration decreased by half, by 90 thousand. people, up to 412 thousand compared to pre-pandemic values. This follows from a study by experts from the Gaidar Institute, which the newspaper cites “News”.

At the same time, in terms of the values ​​of migration exchange with the countries of the Middle East (in addition to Ukraine and Belarus), Russia is still experiencing an increase. “The internal distribution of long-term international migrants continues to shift primarily in favor of immigrants from Tajikistan,” the material says.

At the same time, there is a reduction in the number of participants in the program for the resettlement of compatriots (in recent years they accounted for a significant part of the increase). In the first three quarters of last year, 34.4 thousand people registered under the program. For the same period in 2022, this figure was at the level of 52.6 thousand. The number of temporary residence permits issued to foreigners over the same period fell by 54%, the number of residence permits issued by 12%.

In the fall, the head of the Bank of Russia, Elvira Nabiullina, said that there were almost no free workers left in Russia. The head of the Ministry of Economy, Maxim Reshetnikov, proposed to more actively attract migrants into the economy to solve the problem of labor shortage. Due to the shortage of migrants, Russia is running out of taxi drivers and prices are rising. In December, the Public Council for Taxi Development sent a letter to the Federation Council with a proposal to temporarily allow all migrants to work in taxis to solve the problem of driver shortage.

On December 4, President Vladimir Putin said that there must be “ethnocultural balance” in the migration situation in Russia. According to the president, migration must correspond to the interests of the Russian economy.
