Experts have discovered the second case in Russia of infection with the sub-variant XBB.1.5 or “kraken” of the omicron coronavirus strain, the press service of Rospotrebnadzor informs.
As noted, the case of infection with the sub-variant of “omicron” XBB 1.5 “kraken” was discovered by the laboratory of Rospotrebnadzor as part of monitoring the variability of coronavirus strains. According to the department, the material for sequencing was obtained from the Republic of Tyva.
The press service of Rospotrebnadzor clarified that the active spread of the sub-variant of COVID-19 “kraken” is unlikely. Sub-variant XBB.1.5 has several characteristics that enable it to more effectively evade immune defenses, the agency added.
