In Vostok Bay, located west of Nakhodka, scientists discovered a natural phenomenon – the coloring of ice in red color, reports National Scientific Center for Marine Biology named after. A. V. Zhirmunsky Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (NNTsMB FEB RAS).
Analysis of samples taken by scientists showed that tens of thousands of crustaceans, representatives of zooplankton of the genera Neocalanus, Pseudocalanus, Metridia and Microcalanus, were frozen into the ice. “They colored the ice red due to the presence of pigments in their bodies – carotenoids,” said the NSCMB.
Scientists note that during the period of ice melting on the sea coast of Primorye, it turns brown or green almost every year. This occurs due to microalgae. “It is interesting that the coloring of the ice red this time is due to zooplankton, while microalgae were completely absent in the subglacial layer of water and in the ice itself,” note the NSCMB.
