Poland says Germany will pay reparations if ruling party wins
Germany will pay reparations to Poland for damages caused during World War II if the ruling Law and Justice party in Poland remains in power after the parliamentary elections, said Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland and government representative for reparations Arkadiusz Mulyarchik.
His words are reported by the PAP agency: “I am convinced that if we are in power for another term, Germany will pay reparations.”
Mulyarchik said he was satisfied with the results of the opinion poll, which showed that 54% of citizens believe that Poland should seek reparations from Germany.
On September 1, 2022, Warsaw presented a three-volume report on the losses suffered by Poland as a result of the attack by Nazi Germany and the German occupation in 1939-1945. The amount of reparations declared by Poland amounted to 6.2 trillion zlotys (approximately $1.3 – $1.5 trillion).
Berlin, on the other hand, has repeatedly indicated that it sees no reason for payments, since in 1953 Warsaw officially refused reparations.
Elections to the Polish parliament will be held in autumn. The date will be announced by the head of state no later than 90 days before the end of the term of office of the current parliament, which began working on November 12, 2019.
