Orel Mayor Yuri Parakhin said in his Telegram channel about blocking traffic on the renovated ancient Red Bridge over the Oka River, which was put into operation last week after reconstruction. The reason was the failure of the asphalt under the tram tracks on Gostinaya Street, about 200 m from the bridge.
“We found out that the cause of the collapse was the deterioration of the channel, inside of which there are communications that feed the Trading Rows. The dilapidated wall of the canal collapsed and pulled the asphalt along with it. Neither the heating main nor any other communications were damaged,” said Mr. Parakhin.
According to him, traffic on the bridge, which was launched on November 30 after reconstruction, has been stopped again until at least December 7. Workers will have to open the roadway from the house, inspect the networks for damage, lay down a protective case, pave the area and restore the tramway. According to Kommersant, no work related to the reconstruction of the bridge was carried out at the site of the collapse.
The Red Bridge in Oryol is a cultural heritage site of regional significance. According to the local mayor’s office, until 1919 it was called Mariinsky, in 1943 it was blown up during the retreat of German troops from Orel, and six years later it was restored. Mayor Yuri Parakhin called the bridge is “an indicator of the most critical events in the country” and “the main artery of the city.”
At the end of 2020, the authorities entered into a municipal contract for the reconstruction of the Red Bridge as part of the national project “Safe and High-Quality Highways” with the Belgorod company Remspetsmost. Work worth 1.4 billion rubles. should have been completed in two years, but stopped after the contractor’s management suspected in waste. In March 2022, a contract for the reconstruction of the bridge for almost 2 billion rubles was signed. The authorities entered into an agreement with the Uvarovskaya Mobile Mechanized Column No. 22 company, which completed the work.
