In Odessa, they chose a place for the monument to Catherine II after dismantling

The monument to the founders of Odessa – Catherine II and her associates de Ribas, de Volan, Potemkin and Zubov – after being dismantled from the main square of the city, they were going to send it to the warehouse of a company dealing with cemeteries. This is reported by the Ukrainian media. Subsequently, the monument is planned to be moved to one of the city parks.

The planned dismantling was previously announced by the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksiy Goncharenko. According to him, the corresponding decision was made by the executive committee of the Odessa City Council.

This is not the first time that the monument to Catherine II has been erased from the history of Odessa. It was first dismantled in 1920. In 1965, a monument to the rebellious sailors of the battleship Potemkin appeared in its place. In 2007 the monument was restored. The procedure itself led to political conflict. Viktor Yushchenko, at that time the President of Ukraine, and a number of public organizations protested against the restoration of the monument to Catherine II. Then they declared the inappropriateness of the monument to the Empress, who dissolved the Zaporozhian Sich and became, according to the radicals, “the executioner of the Ukrainian people.”
