The mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, said that 16 species of animals and plants that were previously considered extinct were included in the Red Book of Moscow.
In his Telegram channel, he refuted the prevailing idea of a metropolis as a place where there are no rare plants or animals: “In fact, this is not so.” In the capital of Russia, as he stressed, half of the territories are forests, parks, specially protected natural areas.
The city is working on the revival of populations of rare animal species, the mayor noted. They are grown, then released into their natural habitat, and then their fate is monitored.
Within the framework of such programs, as Sobyanin noted, the populations of the peregrine falcon and hares – the hare and hare – are being restored.
