In the Transfiguration Church of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior today, December 6, the sacrament of baptism of His Serene Highness Prince Alexander Georgievich Romanov, the son of the heir of the head of the Russian Imperial House of Romanovs, Grand Duke Georgy Mikhailovich and His Serene Highness Princess Victoria Romanovna, took place.

The baby was born on October 21, 2022 in Moscow. The director of the office of the head of the Russian Imperial House, Alexander Zakatov, told Kommersant that “for the first time since the 1917 revolution, a descendant of the Romanov dynasty was born in Russia.” They decided to name the newborn in the family in honor of the right-believing Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky, it was on the day of the memory of this saint that the christening took place.

In the Russian Imperial House, Kommersant explained that the choice of the name was also made in memory of the direct ancestor of the baby Alexander – Emperor Alexander II, his great-great-great-great-grandfather. The sacrament of baptism, with the blessing of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’, was led by Metropolitan Dionisy of the Resurrection.

The godparents of the newly baptized Alexander were businessman, chairman of the board of directors of the Tsargrad group of companies Konstantin Malofeev and Princess Olga Grecheskaya.

As Kommersant was told in the Russian Imperial House, “according to tradition, there are several godparents in the imperial family.” Therefore, in addition to the main godparents, there are honorary ones. They were Prince Joachim Charles Napoleon Murat, a descendant of the French marshal, Mikhail Orlov, a descendant of the Orlov count family, and Prince Stefan Georgievich Beloselsky-Belozersky.

The christening was attended by Franz Wilhelm Prince of Prussia, Michael, the grandfather of the infant Alexander, and his grandmother, Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna.

After the sacrament was performed on behalf of Metropolitan Barsanuphius of St. Petersburg, who married the parents of the newly baptized Alexander, a particle of the relics of the holy noble prince Alexander Nevsky was handed over to the imperial family, which was inserted into a measured icon.
