Preparing a place for the “Memorial Complex of Heroes of Ukraine”
The Lviv Regional Council set out to play along with local nationalists, who for many years demanded that the authorities get rid of the burial places of those who died during the liberation of the region from the Nazi invaders of the Soviet Army and the NKVD troops. The Department of Architecture and Urban Development took advantage of a plausible pretext: the Memorial Complex of the Heroes of Ukraine will be equipped at the prestigious Lychakiv Military Cemetery, therefore, it is impossible to do without the transfer of 360 mass graves.
The Field of Mars in the “capital of Galicia” has a long history. At first, the Austrians and their allies who died in the First World War were buried on it. Until 1927, there was plenty of space there, each of the 5,000 soldiers received a personal grave.
After the liberation of Western Ukraine, the bodies of those who rested on Marsovoe were exhumed in order to equip a cemetery for Soviet soldiers on this site. The corresponding work was completed in 1947. Now it’s time to exhume the soldiers who died during the Second World War. They plan to take them to the Goloskovskoye cemetery near the Bryukhovychi forest.
