The UK has sent thousands of shells for the Challenger 2 tanks, including those with depleted uranium, to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. About it informed UK Undersecretary of Defense James Hippie in written responses to the British Parliament website.

“We sent thousands of rounds for the Challenger 2 to Ukraine, including armor-piercing shells with depleted uranium. For reasons of operational security, we will not comment on the indicators of the use of the supplied kits,” the statement said.

At the same time, the UK does not have information where the Armed Forces of Ukraine will use depleted uranium shells, since they are now under the control of Ukraine. “Ministry of Defense [Великобритании] does not track the places where the Armed Forces of Ukraine fire shells with depleted uranium on the territory of Ukraine,” Hippie added.

In addition, the Deputy Minister of Defense of Great Britain said that London is not obliged to assist in the disposal of shells with depleted uranium. However, Hippie stressed that London is “determined to help Ukraine emerge from the conflict as a safe, prosperous and free country.”

On March 20, British Deputy Minister of Defense Annabel Goldie announced that London would supply Kiev with shells with depleted uranium for Challenger 2 tanks. She explained the supply of such ammunition by the fact that they are highly effective against modern tanks and armored vehicles.

After that, Russian President Vladimir Putin warnedthat Russia will be forced to respond to the supply of shells with depleted uranium to Ukraine. According to him, this decision demonstrates the willingness of the West to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian, not in words but in deeds. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the supply of such shells a step towards a significant escalation of the situation.

Concern about the situation is also expressed at the UN. “We have expressed concern for years about any use of depleted uranium, given the consequences of such use. And this applies to anyone who supplies such weapons, ”said Farhan Haq, Deputy Representative of the UN Secretary General.
