Latvia may refuse to celebrate Victory Day for several years. Such a statement did Minister of the Interior of the Baltic Republic Maris Kuchinskis in an interview with TV3.
“A few more years, and we will be able to completely remove the red color from May 9,” he said. At the same time, Kuczynskis admitted that changes in people’s minds “occur slowly.”
The minister noted that May 9 this year passed in the country “relatively peacefully.” According to him, the largest number of people at places dedicated to the memory of those who died in World War II was recorded in Salaspils and Daugavpils. The police also detained several citizens who launched fireworks.
On May 9, 26 people were detained in the republic. The police recorded 35 administrative offenses and filed four criminal cases in connection with the celebration of Victory Day.
At the end of April, the Saeima of Latvia accepted law prohibiting the celebration of May 9th. On this day, it is not allowed to hold any public events in the republic, except for celebrations related to Europe Day. This year, the inhabitants of Latvia could lay flowers only in cemeteries. The authorities of the republic forbade bringing flowers to the places of demolished monuments to Soviet soldiers, as well as wearing St. George ribbons in public places.
