Kyiv did not request 24 F-16 fighters from Western countries, such reports appeared in the press due to a translation error, Colonel Yuriy Ignat, a representative of the Ukrainian Air Force, said on Saturday, Ukrainian media reported.
Earlier, the words of Ignat were circulated in an interview with El Pais. It was reported that he said that Ukraine would like to receive two fighter battalions from the West (12 aircraft each) as part of the first phase of the new support for Kyiv with weapons.
It is explained that Ignat spoke Ukrainian, and the Spanish journalist was translated into English.
“And it turned out that I said that Ukraine wants to get 24 F-16s,” Ignat said. “There were no statements!”
He noted that this kind of information is very sensitive, “such things have a negative impact” and “partners do not like it when wishful thinking is true.”
In an interview with a Spanish publication, he spoke about the advantages of the F-16 over four aircraft models that are at the disposal of the Ukrainian Air Force: the Su-24 bomber, two types of Su-27 fighters, the MiG-29 and the Su-25 attack aircraft. A representative of the Ukrainian Air Force said that the F-16 combines the qualities of all these models.
The Spanish edition noted that the Armed Forces of Ukraine cannot count on the F-16 in the short term. First, all military supplies precede complex political negotiations. Secondly, it takes several months to train pilots and ground support engineers.
