Ex-Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Petr Pavel elected President of the Czech Republic

Former NATO Military Committee Chairman Petr Pavel won the Czech presidential election, reported Czech TV. He will take office on March 9, 2023.
According to the publication, after processing 99.99% of the protocols of the second round of the presidential election, Pavel is gaining 58.32% – more than 3.3 million people voted for him. His opponent, former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, received 41.67% of the vote (2.4 million people). The turnout was 70.25%.
The first round of the presidential elections in the Czech Republic took place on January 14, as a result of which Pavel and Babis entered the second round, receiving 35.4% and 34.99%, respectively. According to the results of the first round, the advantage in favor of Pavel was approximately 22,000 votes, Czech Television specified. The remaining candidates for the presidency – the Czech economist, former rector of the Mendel University in Brno Danusha Nerudova, Senator Pavel Fischer and diplomat Jaroslav Bashta – did not get the required number of votes.
Petr Pavel was born on November 1, 1961 in the town of Plana in the Pilsen region of the Czech Republic. He began his military career in 1983, including working in the Czech military intelligence. From 2012 to 2015, Pavel was Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Army, he was the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee from 2015 to 2018.
