Schoolchildren in the villages of Klyuchi and Kozyrevsk in the Ust-Kamchatsky district will switch to distance learning for 10 days, said the head of the district, Oleg Bondarenko. On the eve of Kamchatka was the strongest ashfall in 60 years due to the eruption of the Shiveluch volcano.
“I propose to transfer schoolchildren of Klyuchi and Kozyrevsk to distance learning for 10 days, because what I have now seen here with my own eyes, it will be impossible for children to go to school, and in general, the presence of children here is, by and large, in question,” wrote Mr. Bondarenko Telegram.
He clarified that the eruption did not damage the road to the village of Ust-Kamchatsk, and traffic on it has already been restored. For residents of Klyuchi and Kozyrevsk, 5 tons of bottled drinking water will be purchased, and there are also two water tanks in Klyuchi. The head of the district added that “the necessary amount of personal protective equipment is available in the settlements.”
Shiveluch is one of the largest volcanoes in Kamchatka. It consists of the Old Shiveluch volcano, the ancient caldera and the active Young Shiveluch volcano. The height of the lava dome of Young Shiveluch is 2500 m above sea level. The volcano is located at a distance of about 50 km from the village of Klyuchi in the Ust-Kamchatsky region and 450 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Yesterday, April 10, in Kamchatka began eruption of the Shiveluch volcano. Ash falls covered nearby settlements. The thickness of the layer of volcanic ash from the volcano reached 8.5 cm in four hours. This ashfall became the strongest in the last 60 years. In the villages of Kozyrevsk and Maiskoye, power supply was cut off due to ashfall, it has already been restored.
