NHK reports that for the first time in the history of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, a woman will be promoted to the rank of admiral.
It is noted that in the Japanese Naval Self-Defense Force there are five regional units, whose destroyers provide security and surveillance in five regions of the country. In addition, they are responsible for responding to natural disasters.
The channel’s data indicates that a woman, namely Natsue Kondo, will be appointed to the post of head of the northern division of Ominato, with headquarters in the city of Mutsu in Aomori Prefecture. It is expected that it will be in charge of protecting the Tsugaru Strait, as well as the Hokkaido region.
NHK added that Kondo, who currently heads the command and officer school as a vice admiral, will be officially appointed on December 22. The TV channel clarified that the highest admiral rank is required to take on the new position, so she will be promoted to admiral.
