Israeli Foreign Ministry calls for the resignation of the head of UNRWA after the alleged discovery of a Hamas tunnel

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz has called for the resignation of the Commissioner General of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza, Philippe Lazzarini.

This is how he commented on the statements of the Israeli military about the discovery of a “terrorist” tunnel under the UNRWA headquarters in Gaza.

Katz called for “immediate action.”

“Lazzarini’s claim of ignorance is not only absurd, it is an insult to common sense. His immediate resignation is mandatory,” Katz writes on social networks.

Earlier, the Israeli military announced that it had found a tunnel of the Palestinian Hamas movement under the central headquarters of UNRWA. The report provides details of the tunnel – it was 700 meters long, 18 meters deep, and had blast doors and electrical wiring leading to UNRWA headquarters. The Israeli military says it has recovered many weapons, ammunition, documents and “intelligence information” and plans to continue its operations.

UNRWA previously received information from Israel about the alleged involvement of some of its employees in the Palestinian Hamas attack on that country on October 7, 2023, and decided to terminate their contracts. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said agency employees suspected of involvement in the attack on Israel would face trial if found guilty. At the same time, many Western countries have decided to suspend funding for UNRWA.
