The Oktyabrsky District Court of Irkutsk invalidated the marriage between persons who “changed sex”. This is at least the second known case of an annulment due to gender reassignment this year.
On the decision of the Irkutsk court told Head of the registry office of the Irkutsk region Valery Mitusov, summing up the work for the first half of 2023. The registry office itself and the prosecutor of the Oktyabrsky district of the city filed a lawsuit with the court. From the words of Mr. Mitusov, it is not clear whether both spouses changed their sex or only one of them.
Valery Mitusov did not specify when the court session took place, but he claims that such a decision was the first in Russia and “created a precedent.” In March, it became known that the Central District Court of Tyumen declared marriage illegal after one of the spouses changed sex. The local prosecutor’s office demanded annulment of family relations, referring to the Family Code.
State Duma this week accepted in the third, final reading, the law on the prohibition of sex change. The document authored by 406 deputies from all factions was approved unanimously. Those who have already changed their sex were banned from adopting children, their marriage will be annulled.
