In Germany they decided to take an unpopular measure for the sake of warmth in winter

German authorities have decided to restart the operation of several coal-fired thermal power plants (CHPs) to ensure uninterrupted energy supply during peak periods of demand this winter. Bloomberg writes about this.
We are talking about returning to operation the stations that belong to the energy companies RWE and LEAG. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection explained that this unpopular measure, in the context of the German authorities’ desire to reduce carbon emissions, should help save natural gas and prevent interruptions in energy supplies during the heating season.
At the same time, experts warn that the decision to return “dirty” thermal power plants to operation could delay the achievement of the country’s climate goals, including the complete abandonment of coal generation by 2030. Since 2020, such energy facilities began to emit a significant share of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
According to the Federal Environmental Protection Agency, by the end of last year the volume of emissions of harmful substances reached 250 million tons, although a couple of years ago they were at the level of 209 million.
