Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili expressed dissatisfaction with the European Union’s decision to refuse to grant Tbilisi candidate status for EU membership. The Prime Minister believes that this decision was unfair.
He indicated that Moldova and Ukraine were granted candidate status subject to the fulfillment of certain obligations and recommendations.
“In our case it was the other way around. We were told that we must first fulfill our obligations, and then we will receive status. This was quite sad for us, I think it was unfair,” the head of government said at a press conference after a meeting with the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell.
Garibashvili also emphasized that granting Georgia candidate status at the end of this year would be the most correct step on the part of the European Union. He noted that Georgia and its people deserve this status, and most of the 12 recommendations have already been implemented.
