Borrell: Georgia needs to fulfill nine more conditions for EU candidate status

Georgia needs to fulfill nine out of 12 conditions to obtain candidate status for joining the European Union, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in Tbilisi.
“The European Commission presented 12 priorities. You [Грузия] have completed three of them, nine still remain,” the diplomat said (quote according to TASS). He clarified that the country must carry out reforms in the areas of the rule of law, media freedom, and human rights.
Previously, the head of European diplomacy had already declaredthat Georgia needs to do “certain work” to join the union. At the same time, he noted that “the door of the European Union is open for Georgia.”
Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili, after negotiations with Borrell, said that the decision taken by the EU in 2022 to refuse to grant candidate status for accession to the community for Georgia is unfair. Georgia applied to join the union on March 3 last year.
In the summer of 2022, the European Union granted candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova for membership in the organization. Then President of the European Council Charles Michel clarifiedthat Georgia can also receive candidate status after fulfilling a number of conditions.
