On January 1, a law on marriage between two adults, regardless of their gender, came into force in Estonia. This information was provided by the state broadcasting portal ERR.
According to the new law, marriage can be concluded between two adults, regardless of their gender. The decision to adopt this law was made by the Estonian Parliament in June of this year.
Since the end of December, updated gender-neutral forms for divorce documents have appeared in Estonian registry offices. New forms use the terms “first spouse” and “second spouse”, instead of the traditional “man” and “woman”. However, old-style forms are also available.
At the beginning of November, a similar law was adopted in Latvia, allowing the conclusion of legal partnerships between adults living in a common household, including same-sex people.
