British scientist Russell warned of the risk of death of mankind due to the development of artificial intelligence

British scientist Stuart Russell said that the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), capable of solving any intellectual problems, threatens humanity with a catastrophe.

As Russell said in an interview with the Times, uncontrolled developments in the field of AI have led to the fact that the developers “have made progress that they themselves did not expect.” According to him, humanity made a mistake at the very beginning, not thinking about what this intelligence would be needed for, and it is likely that superintelligent machines will begin to resist attempts to control them.

To the question “how to maintain power over entities that are stronger than you,” Russell considers one answer to be correct: if you do not know this, then stop researching. “It’s very simple,” says the scientist.

He emphasized: “If we do not control our own civilization, then we forfeit the right to vote on our future existence.”

According to Russell’s calculations, the emergence of universal AI – a system capable of performing any task that a person can do – could occur within 10 years. And, for example, solving problems related to climate, such programs may come to the conclusion that getting rid of people is the best solution, the scientist fears.

He also said: “If you teach AI to mimic human behavior, then, in essence, you teach it to set human goals and pursue them.” At the same time, he noted that “human goals include a variety of things” and “the emergence of truly effective systems that would pursue such goals” would be a disaster.

Earlier, American businessman Elon Musk warned that AI will inevitably begin to control itself, with the potential to destroy humanity.
