The state prosecution asked the court in Minsk to sentence human rights activist and Nobel laureate Ales Byalyatsky to 12 years in prison.
The court began hearing the case in January. Byalyatsky and other leaders of the Viasna human rights center, Vladimir Labkovich, Valentin Stefanovich and Dmitry Solovyov, are accused of smuggling and “organizing actions that grossly violate public order.”
Of the four defendants, only Solovyov is outside Belarus, he is being tried in absentia.
Prosecutor Alexander Korol requested 12 years for Bialiatski, 11 for Stefanovich, 9 for Labkovich, and 10 years for Solovyov in a penal colony with a high security regime, as well as a fine of 5,000 basic units (about $68,000) for each.
