Axios portal in its research The video game market concluded that 2023 will see the highest number of highly acclaimed games released in 20 years. The company studied the number of games per year with ratings of 90 or higher on the review aggregator Metacritic since 2004.
In 2023, 25 video games were released with scores of 90 or higher on at least one of the platforms on which the game appeared. The most highly rated were “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” and “Baldur`s Gate III” (both received 96 points). The last time more than 20 highly rated games were released in a year was 2011, when The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Batman Arkham City hit shelves (both scored 96).
Axios believes that 2023 was such a good year for games because many high-profile games received extra development time. According to the study’s authors, this proves that giving developers more time often pays off. The study also notes that in 2023, many games were released with high scores that did not reach 90 points, examples being “Hi-Fi Rush” (87), a remake of “Dead Space” (89), “Armored Core VI” (88) and Pizza Tower (89).
