In 2022, the minimum number of children born in Russia since 2000

According to Rosstat, in 2022, the natural decline in the population of Russia amounted to 599.6 thousand people. The indicator was 42.5% lower than the total for 2021, when against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, an absolute record was set in the country in the recent history of the Russian Federation – 1.04 million people.
How notes RBC, the indicator of natural population decline – the excess of the number of deaths over the number of births – is typical for modern Russia, this ratio has been recorded annually since the 1990s. The exception was 2013-2015, when there was a slight increase in the population, not exceeding 32 thousand people annually.
Last year, the decline in the number of births accelerated compared to the two previous years, and at the end of the year the number of births fell to 1.306 million people (a decrease of 6.9%). The rate has been the lowest since 2000.
Also in 2022, the birth rate fell (number of births per 1,000 people). The indicator was 9.0, while in 2021 it was 9.6. According to Rosstat data, the number of births in Russia has been declining since 2015. In particular, at the end of 2021, the decrease was 2.7%, at the end of 2020 – 3%.
Mortality in 2022 showed a positive trend – the number of deaths decreased by 22% compared to 2021 and amounted to 1.906 million people. At the same time, RBC notes that the indicator was affected by the high base of 2021, which was characterized by “supermortality” from the coronavirus. So, in comparison with the pre-Covid 2019, mortality in the Russian Federation increased by 6% last year.
