Immunologist, Candidate of Medical Sciences Nikolai Kryuchkov in an interview with URA.RU predicted that the influenza virus could take pandemic form in 2024. According to him, this is unlikely to happen this year, but the specialist believes that there will be a flu pandemic. The doctor admitted that the pandemic form of influenza will arise from the fall of next year and last at least one season. At the same time, the immunologist does not exclude that the situation may be worse than it was in 2009 and 2010.
However, Kryuchkov stressed that even if the spread of influenza takes a pandemic form, it is unlikely to be more severe than the coronavirus. The immunologist clarified that the new coronavirus infection will be more dangerous than the flu, and in terms of consequences and mortality, the coronavirus will be in first place even if it goes into a “conditionally seasonal form.” In second place, according to the specialist, will be influenza, and then there will be respiratory syncytial virus and other infections.
The immunologist clarified that a conditionally seasonal form of coronavirus may appear by the fall of this year, but he does not exclude that a more pathogenic version of the virus may arise. Kryuchkov believes that the infectiousness will be maintained at a high level or gradually increase. He also added that there are several scenarios and it is difficult to make forecasts for the coronavirus, but it must be understood that even if the virus stabilizes by autumn, this does not mean that there will be no new wave.
