The family of Raimonds Pauls is in great grief. His beloved wife Lana (Svetlana Epifanova), with whom he lived for more than sixty years, died. For the close people of the composer, the sudden death of his wife was a great shock. Ilya Reznik, with whom Pauls wrote the best songs of his life, could not hold back his tears. About what kind of relationship Lana had with Raymond, as well as about the tragic foreboding of the composer, Ilya Rakhmielevich told MK correspondents.

– Terrifying news, – Ilya Rakhmielevich sighs. – I cried when I found out. I could not restrain my sobs, because the state is terrible, nervous. I immediately dialed Raymond, of course. But he didn’t pick up the phone. At such moments, there is no time for talking, of course.

I knew that Lanochka was in the hospital. But I didn’t know it was that serious.

Lana was the core of this brilliant composer. She gave him the opportunity to create for the benefit of the whole world. She did all the housework. He did not know at all the worries about the house. Raymond was engaged only in creativity.

– Did they have an idyllic relationship?

– Certainly. Absolute stability, respect for each other. It was a high class family. I remember when we were preparing the “Two Maestros” program, we were sitting at their house in Riga: I with Irochka and Lana with Raymond. Lana looks at Ira so piercingly and says: “Ilya, you are lucky. You finally have a real wife.”

I smiled back and said to Raymond: “And you’re lucky.” Pauls nodded his head: “Yes, yes, of course. We have been living for 50 years, and every morning she asks me: “Will you have coffee?” They are both humorous.

I remember once bringing Lana a large bouquet of flowers. She looks and says: “Oh, those Moscow things of yours.” Next time I brought a small bouquet on purpose. She smiled.

– I’m very worried about Raymond, for his health, I’m terribly worried, – says Ilya Rakhmielevich. Because he is alone. How will he be now, with whom will he be … It is very difficult to remain without support at our age.

– I understand that there were no signs of trouble?

– We recently got in touch. He was so happy that the London orchestra played some of his instrumental pieces. He says: “Your two compositions are there.” He promised to send music. It only alerted me that Raymond had recently written the Requiem. Therefore, everything is very tragic, unfortunately.

Why didn’t anyone know that Lana was sick?

They had a very closed family. They did not like to give interviews, they did not announce any events from their lives. They were reserved, I would say. But they loved each other very much.
