Presidential elections are scheduled to take place on March 17, 2024. Officially, the Federation Council will determine the date of the elections in December. The current Russian President Vladimir Putin has not yet announced his participation in the upcoming elections. The status of a defendant in a criminal case does not interfere with presidential nomination. However, if Igor Strelkov is sentenced before the elections, he will not be able to take part in the election campaign.

Since July, Igor Strelkov has been under arrest on charges of extremism.
