The Russian Championship in Deaf Sports in the Taekwondo discipline was held in the island region for the first time. The prestigious competition brought together about 150 participants from 11 regions of the country in the regional center. The Sakhalin region was represented at the competition by South Sakhalin resident Igor Kim, who once again confirmed his champion status. This was reported by the press service of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk administration.

The athlete competed in the “duel” discipline in the 58 kg weight category. As the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk coach Denis Kim said, the victory was confident. A graduate of the Sakhalin SShOR in Greco-Roman wrestling won three matches and won a gold medal. The first place on the podium gave the island athlete the opportunity to join the national team.

Now the South Sakhalin resident has a busy schedule. Igor Kim is at a sports training camp in Sochi – this is the first stage of athletes’ preparation for the world tournament, which will take place in Bishkek in 2024.

“At home you are doubly responsible. Nevertheless, Igor coped with his excitement. He was one of the leaders, came in strong number one in the draw and confidently won a place in the Russian national team,” said the head coach of the Sakhalin region taekwondo team, Honored Coach of Russia Denis Kim.

Under the leadership of Denis Kim, the athlete has been practicing taekwondo for more than 15 years. According to the mentor, the South Sakhalin resident has determination and high moral and volitional qualities, which undoubtedly contributes to the achievement of such results.
