If athletes from Russia are admitted to the Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris in 2024, 108 Russian athletes will be able to compete. This was announced by Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin. He noted that the situation is changing daily, but for Russia “not for the better.”
“The forecasts have not changed, the numbers were based on participation in the qualifying competitions. Team sports will not be able to take part, and athletics will no longer be represented at the Olympic Games. A statistical analysis was done, and we came to a figure – 108 athletes, this is the maximum figure. But it changes every day, not for the better,” said Mr. Matytsin (quote from TASS).
In response to the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that international federations not allow Russian athletes to participate in competitions. On March 28, 2023, the IOC approved the admission of Russians to competitions as neutral athletes, provided that they do not support a military operation and are not associated with Russian security forces. However, they should not be represented in team sports. The decision on the admission of Russian athletes to the Olympics in Paris has not yet been made.
