Ice Hockey Federation banned CSKA international transfers due to goalkeeper Fedotov

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) presented the results of the verification of contracts concluded by Russian hockey player Ivan Fedotov with the clubs of the National Hockey League (NHL) and CSKA for compliance with the federation’s transfer regulations. The IIHF suspended Fedotov for four months and imposed a ban on international transfers on CSKA for a year.
According to press release federation, based on evidence provided by interested parties, the IIHF has determined that Ivan Fedotov has an active NHL contract with the Philadelphia Flyers for the 2023/24 season. For the same season, Fedotov signed a contract with the CSKA hockey club. Thus, according to the IIHF decision, Ivan Fedotov violated the IIHF international transfer regulations.
It is noted that, in accordance with the regulations, the hockey player was given two weeks to return to the Philadelphia Flyers club or terminate the contract with him. Since Ivan Fedotov did not submit a decision on this issue to the IIHF during the specified period, the federation decided to disqualify the athlete for four months from participating in official national and international games. The suspension takes effect on September 1 and ends on December 31, 2023.
The federation’s decision also states that the CSKA hockey club knew about Ivan Fedotov’s contract with the NHL and did not prove that he did not induce the player to violate the contract. In this regard, the federation decided to impose sanctions on CSKA in the form of a ban on international transfers. The ban went into effect on August 11 and will last until August 10, 2024.
In the spring of 2022, Ivan Fedotov signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers NHL club, but in July he was detained in St. Petersburg for evading military service. He was sent to the military unit. Upon completion of his military service, the goalkeeper did not return to the United States, but signed a contract with CSKA, for which he played until the end of the 2021/22 season.
The Philadelphia Flyers and the NHL leadership said that the contract of the American team with the Russian was not terminated, but was only “frozen”. So, he is bound by obligations and CSKA could not sign an agreement with him. According to the Russian side, there is no contract, which means that Fedotov’s signing is legal.
