The first racket of the world Daniil Medvedev commented on the conflict with the fan that occurred after the defeat at the tournament in Montreal.
The incident occurred on August 11 after the match of the second round of the tournament: Medvedev lost to the Australian Nick Kyrgios in three sets – 7:6, 4:6, 2:6. When the Russian left the court, one of the spectators shouted the word “loser” at him. The tennis player turned around and approached the fan. They began a tense minute-long dialogue, at the end of which the Russian, with a characteristic gesture at the temple, advised the man to “turn on his brains.”
“It doesn’t matter – after the match, during the tournament, on the street or at home – if someone laughs at me, I will answer,” L’Equipe quotes Medvedev. The tennis player told the publication that, approaching the fan, he tried to understand what the problems were and why he shouted this word at him. “The people around him wanted him to apologize,” Medvedev said, stressing that he would never allow anyone to yell nasty things at him.
The tennis player admitted that this is one of the first cases that happened to him in real life, not excluding the possibility of repetition. “The more famous you become, the more likely you are,” added the 26-year-old tennis player, who has been at the top of the world rankings for 12 weeks now.
