In 2023, the Russian Navy will adopt the Tsirkon hypersonic anti-ship cruise missile. This was announced by the General Director of NPO Mashinostroeniya Alexander Leonov, whose words are quoted by TASS.
Answering the question of journalists whether the maximum range of Zircon corresponds to 900 km, as previously stated by the Ministry of Defense, Mr. Leonov said: “You know, I’m not talking about performance. I confirm what the military says. And it is not customary for us to speak more broadly. But this is not the maximum range. The missile should be adopted by the Navy this year.”
At the same time, Mr. Leonov noted that the issue of adopting the missile into service is “purely organizational”. “A standard set of procedures and a set of documents for the adoption of Zircon into service is being carried out. There is nothing unusual here,” he added. The missile has already entered serial production, the Admiral Gorshkov frigate has received it, Mr. Leonov concluded.
January 4, President Vladimir Putin via video link accepted participation in the ceremony of sending the Admiral Gorshkov frigate, equipped with Zircon hypersonic missiles, to combat service. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the frigate is sailing in the Atlantic and Indian oceans, as well as in the Mediterranean. Earlier, the president specified that the area for the deployment of new weapons would be chosen based on Russia’s “security interests”.
