Hungary will continue to oppose Ukraine’s admission to the EU

Hungary has expressed its readiness to confront Ukraine during the upcoming negotiations on the country’s possible accession to the European Union. Advisor to the Prime Minister of Hungary Balazs Orban wrote about this on social networks.
“Over the past few hours in Brussels, the European Council discussed the issue of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. Hungary’s position remains unchanged: we believe that Ukraine is not ready for negotiations with the EU. Therefore, we oppose the start of negotiations,” said the adviser to the Hungarian Prime Minister .
He also said that after lengthy discussions, representatives of Hungary decided to leave the meeting room and abstain from voting. This, he said, is not aimed at blocking the decision, but rather at avoiding participation in a flawed decision that Budapest is said to disagree with.
“The European Council agreement represents a decision in principle. Subsequently, member states must also unanimously agree on the specific framework of the negotiations. In addition, at least 70 unanimous decisions will be required in the coming years to approve Ukraine’s accession to the EU,” Orban added.
