Hungary does not intend to extradite to the authorities of Ukraine citizens of this country who evade conscription for military service and find themselves among refugees on Hungarian territory. This was stated by Deputy Hungarian Prime Minister Zsolt Shemien.
The politician emphasized that his country does not conduct investigations into the evasion of Ukrainian refugees from military service in their homeland and does not extradite such persons back.
Shemien assured that “all Ukrainian refugees can consider themselves free people in Hungary and independently decide whether to stay in this country, go to the West or return back.”
Earlier, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky signed a decree on verification all decisions of military medical commissions from February 24, 2022. This happened after Kyiv announced its intention to return to their homeland Ukrainians liable for military service who were able to leave the country on the basis of medical certificates confirming the availability of a medical exemption from conscription for military service.
Military expert, retired Bundeswehr Colonel Wolfgang Richter said that complaints from the President of Ukraine about people evading mobilization are an alarming signal. Public statements by the head of state on this matter show that the image of a Ukraine united by patriotism only partially true.
