The Hungarian government has asked the European Commission to investigate Bulgaria’s decision to impose an additional fee for the transit of Russian gas through its territory. The Hungarian Minister for EU Affairs, Janos Boka, announced the appeal to the EU authorities.
According to the minister, the additional fee imposed is unlawful, and the European Commission should oblige the Bulgarian authorities to suspend its collection. Janos Boka warned that if Brussels refuses to take action against Sofia, a lawsuit will be prepared in the European Court.
An additional fee of about 10 euros per megawatt-hour for gas transit was approved by the Bulgarian Parliament on October 13. We are talking about blue fuel, which enters the country through the Turkish Stream pipeline, and then through its branches is sent to Serbia and Hungary.
Later, Belgrade and Budapest prepared a joint appeal in which they called Sofia’s decision to introduce an additional fee a hostile step that threatens the security of energy supplies to the two states.
