The European Commission (EC) approved the amendments made to the agreements between Hungary and Russia on the Paks-2 NPP project, which will allow the construction to continue with the participation of Rosatom. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto, on Facebook (owned by Meta, which is banned and recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation).
“The EU has approved changes to contracts for the construction of new power units of the nuclear power plant in Paks. The amendments received a green light from the European Commission, and this will allow the power units of the Paks NPP to be put into operation in the next decade,” he said in a video message.
We are talking about changes in the financial and technical documents that Russia and Hungary agreed on in April this year during Szijjártó’s visit to Moscow. The minister explained the need for amendments by the fact that since the conclusion of the agreement in 2014, there have been “life and technological changes”. He called the construction of two new nuclear power units “a long-term guarantee of energy security” for Hungary.
At present, the nuclear power plant in Paks, built according to Soviet technologies on the banks of the Danube, has four power units with VVER-440 reactors. The station provides 49.6% of production and more than a third of electricity consumption in the country.
“Rosatom» will be responsible for construction power units No. 5 and No. 6 according to Russian technologies. After the commissioning of new units, the station’s capacity will increase from the current 2,000 megawatts to 4,400 megawatts. The project is estimated at 12.5 billion euros. Earlier, Russia announced its readiness to provide Hungary with up to 10 billion euros in the form of a state loan. It is expected that the construction of “Paks-2” will begin already in 2024
