Politico: Hungarian Prime Minister Orban may head the European Council
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban may become head of the European Council after the departure of current Chairman Charles Michel. The newspaper Politico writes about this.
In the absence of an agreed decision on a new candidate, Orban, who holds the presidency of the EU Council for the current six months, will temporarily head the European Council, the article says.
There is still time to discuss a new candidate. Michel will serve until July 16, when he will take the oath of office as an MEP. A final decision on a new chairman is expected in late June or early July.
Orban’s possible appointment raises some concerns because of his position on Ukraine and possible pressure on European leaders, the publication claims.
