Hungarian PM: EU countries close to discussing sending peacekeepers to Ukraine

The countries of the European Union are close to the fact that the conversation about sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine has become generally accepted, declared Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on the radio Kossuth.

“We are close to the fact that in the conversations of European leaders, the question of whether EU member states can send troops of some kind of peacekeeping type in any form, or better not to send, has become legitimate and accepted,” he said (quote according to RIA Novosti).

Orban called such a discussion a previously uncrossable border.

At the same time, the Hungarian prime minister recalled that a year ago, discussions in the EU were held around the supply of lethal weapons to Kiev, but today it is already a question of whether to supply Ukraine only tanks, or also aircraft, shells with uranium-containing elements or troops, Orban added.

Earlier in March, Orban said about the high risk that soldiers of countries allied to Ukraine will also take part in hostilities. On February 16, the Polish edition of Onet announced the beginning of the formation in Ukraine of the first Polish special unit as part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The next day, Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland Pavel Yablonsky declined to comment on the publication, stressing that the Polish military was not taking part in the hostilities in Ukraine.

At the end of January, Orban said that Hungary was watching with concern the supply of arms to Ukraine and was afraid that some of the EU countries would send troops there. Also in Budapest supported China’s plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

The Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized the supply of Western weapons to the Ukrainian army. In particular, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Zakharova, warned that pumping Ukraine with weapons brings NATO closer to the dangerous line of a direct military clash with Russia.
