How the number of disciplines changed at the Winter Olympics

[ad_1]

On January 25, 1924, in the city of Chamonix in France, they started first Winter Olympic Games. 260 athletes from 16 countries competed in 9 sports disciplines. Over the years, their composition has changed, the total number by the last Olympics in Beijing reached 15. The number of medal sets played out increased from 16 to 109.

Since the first Olympics, the standings have included speed skating, Nordic combined, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, figure skating, and hockey. Only one Olympics (in Squaw Valley in 1960) was held without bobsleigh. Curling, after its debut in 1924, returned to the list of Olympic sports only in 1998. Skeleton competitions were held in 1928, then in 1948, and on a regular basis only since 2002. Only at the first Olympics was a patrol race (military patrol) held – the predecessor of modern biathlon. The latter joined the list of Olympic disciplines in 1960.

The latest additions to the Olympic sports team occurred in the 1990s, when the first medals were awarded in short track speed skating, freestyle skiing and snowboarding. On the following Games, which will be held in 2026 in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, will host ski mountaineering competitions for the first time.
